How has DVR affected advertising?

Over the past couple of years, DVR has become very popular. Many people have DVR on at-least one of their TV's at home. They use it to record their favorite shows or movies that they are unable to watch at the premiere time or just to record. When people DVR a television show, they are most likely going to fast forward through all the commercials missing out on what new products and promotions are available. With DVR becoming more popular and people less likely to even see a commercial, what does that mean for businesses and their advertising? Should companies pay less for TV commercials and focus more on online advertising?

  1. I definitely think DVR has and will greatly affect the advertising business. Commercials drive television and allow for the industry to make money so if DVR takes off and enters the homes of the greater population than the way television runs will most definitely be altered. Television will have to find another way to make money and advertisers will have to find an alternative method of reaching their audience. If this becomes too large of an issue I can foresee DVR not allowing their users to fast forward through commercials.

  2. I think advertisers will begin to focus on advertising on the Internet and other places, and not as much on television. Now, everyone doesnt have DVR but it is becoming increasingly popular and all the impatient viewers are able to miss the commercials and get back to their show. It is definitely a big it to commercial advertising which has been so crucial in the success of some companies.

  3. I believe as the popularity of the DVR grows, advertisers will become more creative. I agree that they will probably start to advertise more on the internet but I also bet they will begin advertising directly within shows or through more product placements without us even realizing most of the time.
